| 内容記述 | The aim of the present paper is to make a persuasive interpretation of the transition of lexical meanings of the three prepositions: wip, mid, and against, through a revision of the model presented in Ohmori (1997) which tentatively explained the semantic rivalry among them. This newly revised model is appropriately prepared to describe the process of shifts in the semantic cline of the prepositions in details. On the basis of added linguistic data from MED and the Helsinki Corpus, this study reveals the linguistic fact that the preposition mid [+proximity] disappeared in the last half of the 14th century, which leads to the exclusively dominant prevalence of the preposition wiδ (wip) and the reformation of the semantic domains on the lexical scale: at one extreme the preposition against (<ongean) [+opposition] exists, on the contrary, the preposition with (<wib) [+proximity] exists at another extreme. What causes this shift will be inferred as follows: the phonological similarities between mid and wiδ (wip), and the appearance of Old Norse speaking societies in Britain in the late OE and early ME periods and the establishment of Modern Standard English in the late ME and early ModE periods. The former can be referred to as an internal factor to generate the driving force to promote the language change concerned, while the latter can be considered as an external factor to explain these phenomena from a socio-linguistic viewpoint. Especially concerning the internal factor and its effects, it should be noted that the linguistic drift advocated by Sapir, which is probably inherited in the English language, plays an important role in the course of changes from OE through ME to ModE. | |||||
